 ~~~ i -Ownership and Copyrights ~~~
City of Heroes (CoH) and City of Villians (CoV) are owned and copywritten by
Cryptic Studios and NCsoft corporation. This faq, on the other hand, is mine.
It can be found linked to IGN, Gamefaqs, Neoseeker, and the Justice Force, as
well as my own, Wu Yausu.
 ~~~ ii - Versions ~~~

This is the Issue 9 (I9) version. Every time these games get a majour update,
it is called an Issue. There may be updates between issues that require a faq
change, but so far, every Issue has required at least a minour update in the
guide.

 ~~~ iii - Contributing and Contacting ~~~
If you wish to contribute to this faq, you can contact me at:
webmaster (at) wuyausu.com, or to let me know it is directly related to
CoH/CoV, you can contact me at oninoonmitsu (at) wuyausu.com.  Or, you could
go to http://wuyausu.com and leave me a note on my tag board.
There have been a couple people that have helped me in the compilation of this
faq in the past.  They are:
LightTiger (Triumph server) - Change Costume command
Lord Onyx (Justice server) - Testing the costume change/power combination that
I wrote while I was unable to get on.
 ~~~ iv - What's New? ~~~

1 - New I7 emotes have been added.

2 - CoV command has been removed. This used to allow access to CoV costumes
	in CoH if you had both games. Since access is automatic now, and the
	devs have blocked the CoV command, I have removed it from the faq.

3 - Section 10, with the odd key names, has been expanded on the suggestion of
	goodlivn.

4 - The Default Keybind Layout, the new section 9, has been added at the
	suggestion of happyscrub.

5 - The Q & A section has been extended, how to auto-send, font colours

6 - Bubble Colouring section added, due to the heavy number of requests for it.

 ~~~ 1 - Macroes versus Key Binds ~~~
Many players I have spoken to do not seem to understand the differences
between the two. That is understandable since the difference is mostly in the
execution, not the effect.
When a macro is created in City of Heroes, it places itself automatically in
the powers tray. The benefit to this is that players who prefer the mouse can
activate it straight from the tray. The downside is, even with the tray fully
extended, a player only has 20 slots available. That means, assuming you do
not have any non-power macroes up, you will still be 5 shy of showing all
powers. Probably more once the epic at's are live.
A macro always starts with /macro.
A key bind is like your movement keys, where no mouse is needed. If you key
bind a power, that means it is activated from the keyboard. The benefit is
that it does not take up any space in your power tray. The downside is, if you
are a mouse player, this can become awkward. You also risk forgetting what
binds are where for individual characters.
A key binding always starts with /bind
 ~~~ 2 - Commands ~~~

Okay, you have decided what kind of short-cut you want, macro or key bind. The
next step is to decide if you want to use a command, an emote, or both. If you
decide you want commands or both, start here. If not, skip down to Emote Names.

When typing in the chat box, a backslash before the command with no space
activates the effect. However, the commands, when making a macro or key
binding, will be seperated by $$.

The following is a brief list of commands and what they do.

	Saving it in txt form allows you to modify it later. I will cover that
	later.

Bind_load - Loads your keybinds.txt file from your CoH/CoV folder.

 ~~~ 5 - Replaceable values ~~~
There are six (6) replaceable values that I have found thus far.  Each
replaceable value is preceded by a single dollar sign ($) with no space.  I
 specify this because commands use a double dollar sign and a space before
the command.
$target - Places the name of what-ever you have selected/targeted into the
macro/binding.  If you have another player targeted, it will say his/her
name.  This is the only replaceable value that uses the targeted value.
The rest use your own.
$archetype - This places your archetype into the macro/binding..
$origin - This places your origin into the macro/binding.
$name - This places your name into the macro/binding.
$level - This places your level into the macro/binding.
$battlecry - Your character's battle cry will be used.  Set you battle
cry under your I.D. (\ then d in game)
So, as an example, a 7th level magic blaster named Deviant (looking at
deviantART as I type this) with a target of Freakizoid could use the
following macro/binding:
"local Greetings, $target.  I am $name, a $level $origin $archetype."
And it would appear in game as:
"Greetings, Freakizoid.  I am Deviant, a 7th level magic blaster."
More on this, though, in combining below.
 ~~~ 6 - Putting it together, Macros ~~~

To be honest, I am a keyboard player. I do use the mouse, but usually only
 to select targets. The tab key is bound to cycle through the targets, but
 selecting the target you want can take too long and get you killed that
way.

Macros can come in quite handy, especially for those who prefer to use the
mouse over keyboard. They can, literally, be a life-saver.

For example, a common macro for players who like to team up is a cry for
help. It would look something like this:

/macro Help “local Help! $target is giving me problems!”

If the player was fighting against, say, Lead Freezer (a boss for the
Outcasts, generally around level 17 or 18), it would come out as:

“Help! Lead Freezer is giving me problems!”

You can include emotes in by using the double dollar sign followed by a
space and emote ($$ emote). So, a greetings where you bow would looks
something like this:

/macro Hi “local Greetings, $target. $$ emote bow”

It would appear as:

Greetings, Yunthor. (with the character bowing)

You want to combine a spoken phrase with a thought? It would go something
like this:

/macro Like “local No, really $target. I really do like you. $$ emote
Well, kind of…”

It would appear as:

“No, really Yunthor. I really do like you.”
*Well, kind of…*

You want to throw a power in? It would go like this:

/macro Lotus "local Hasu shizuko!$$powexec_name the lotus drops$$
	costume_change 1"

What this will do is is have your character shout Hasu shizuko while performing
	the Lotus Drops attack and changing into your costume slot 1.

 ~~~ 7 - Putting it together, Key Binds ~~~
This is for those who prefer to either use the keyboard or simply save tray
 space.  If it looks similar to the macro information, that is because it
is extremely similar.  In fact, it is all but the exact same process.
Key binds, like macros, can be life-savers.  More-so, in my opinion, than
macros.  Macros, you still have to click through the tray to get what you
want, especially at high levels.
The first, but obvious difference in the programming of a key bind from a
macro is that you type /bind, rather than /macro.  The second difference is
 that, rather than naming the bind next, as you would a macro, you list
what key you want it bound to.  Beyond that, the two are identical in
results, except that you can use a key bind to activate a macro if you wish
 (though that is a rather colossal waste of time to me.)
The help macro above, in a key bind, would look like this:
/bind h “local Help!  $target is giving me problems!”
As above, if the player was fighting against a Lead Freezer, it would come
out as:
“Help!  Lead Freezer is giving me problems!”
Like macros, you can include emotes in by using the double dollar sign
followed by a space and emote ($$ emote).  So, a greetings where you bow
would looks something like this:
/bind t “local Greetings, $target. $$ emote bow”
It would appear as:
Greetings, Yunthor.  (with the character bowing)
You want to combine a spoken phrase with a thought?  Again, it would go
something like this:
/bind l “local No, really $target.  I really do like you. $$ emote Well,
kind of…”
It would appear as:
“No, really Yunthor.  I really do like you.”
*Well, kind of…*
You want to throw a power in?  It would go like this:
/bind p "local Hasu shizuko!$$powexec_name the lotus drops$$
	costume_change 1"
What this will do is is have your character shout Hasu shizuko while performing
	the Lotus Drops attack and changing into your costume slot 1.
 ~~~ 8 - Useful Macroes/Binds ~~~

There are a number of macroes/binds that are life-savers and I highly
recommend everybody incorporate them into your character in some way. I
will list them below and why I think they would be good for. The keys/names
can be changed, of course, to suit your needs. The keys listed are the
ones I use.

 ~~~ Yes ~~~
/bind f1 "local Yes"
/macro Yes "local Yes"
 ~~~ No ~~~

/bind f2 "local No"
/macro no "local No"

Why? When fighting for your life, and you have somebody willing to help
you, but polite enough to make sure you WANT the help, you should be
polite enough to answer. However, it can be tricky to take the time to
answer with-out dying. So, a simple macro/bind that says "Yes/Yes please."
 or "No/No thanks." will come in quite handy.

 ~~~ Respite/dramatic Improvement/Resurgence ~~~
/bind f6 "$$ inspexec_name respite"
/macro respite " $$ inspexec_name respite"
When fighting, and taking heavy damage, everybody can use a quick way to
activate the healing insperations.  This bind/macro will do just that. The
key position is perfect for me, since I use the 'y' through ']' line for
attack powers.  As you progress in insperations, you simply replace respite
with dramatic improvement, and eventually resurgence.  With it bound, you
do not have to worry about your insperations tray being disorganized, or
even being up.
 ~~~ Enrage/Focused Rage/Righteous Rage ~~~

/bind f7 "$$ inspexec_name enrage"
/macro rage "$$ inspexec_name enrage"

A quick boost in attack power is always useful. As with respite, the
location is useful for me, but change it as you need. Focused Rage and
Righteous Rage are the improved versions.

 ~~~ Insight/Keen Insight/Uncanny Insight ~~~
/bind f8 "$$ inspexec_name insight"
/macro insight "$$ inspexec_name insight"
As with all the others, this uses an insight insperation, assuming you have
one.  Keen insight and uncanny insight are the improved versions.
 ~~~ catch A Breath/Take A Breather/Second Wind ~~~

/bind f9 "$$ inspexec_name catch a breath"
/macro breath "$$ inspexec_name catch a breath"

Again, replace catch a breath with take a breather or second wind as
needed.

 ~~~ Luck/Good Luck/Phenomenal Luck ~~~
/bind f10 "$$ inspexec_name luck"
/macro luck "$$ inspexec_name luck"
Good luck and phenomenal luck are the improved versions.  Replace luck
as needed.
 ~~~ Discipline/Strength of Will/Iron Will ~~~

/bind f11 "$$ inspexec_name discipline"
/macro disc "$$ inspexec_name discipline"

Strength of will and iron will are the improved versions of discipline,
replace as needed.

 ~~~ Awaken/Bounce Back/Restoration ~~~
/bind f12 "$$ inspexec_name awaken"
/macro awaken "$$ inspexec_name awaken"
Actually, I do not bind this one.  I find it pointless, as you have to time
its use carefully enough to warrent use of the tray.  If you choose to,
though, you can use bounce back and restoration to replace awaken as
needed.
 ~~~ 10 - Chord Keys, Number Pad, and Mouse Buttons ~~~

What is a cord key? A key cord is bound key that needs two keys to use,
like left shift+tab for target_friend_near.

The chord key commands are:

lshift - left shift
rshift - right shift
lctrl - left ctrl
rctrl - right ctrl

So, if I want to bind a chord key to tab for select nearest friend, it
would look like this:

/bind lshift+tab "$$ target_friend_near"

This specifies to the system that the left shift must be held when tab is
pressed to activate target_friend_near.

CAUTION: Be sure to always put the chord key first. Other-wise, the
system will read this:

/bind tab+lshift "$$ target_friend_near"

as

/bind tab "$$ target_friend_near"

Your toggle_enemy bind on tab will be overridden.

And because I can think of no place else to put them, numberpad keys can
be used by designating numpad before the actual key. The list:

numpad1
numpad2
numpad3
numpad4
numpad5
numpad6
numpad7
numpad8
numpad9
numpad0
numpad.
numpad+
numpad-
numpad*
numpad/
numpadenter

For those with net-browser mice (4 or more buttons):
button4 is the thumb button. I button5 *should* be the second thumb
button for those that have it. Commands button5 through 8 do not give
error messages. However, they do not seem to be active, either.

lbutton - Left button on default mouse lay-outs.
rbutton - Right button on default mouse lay-outs.
mbutton - Middle button on default mouse lay-outs. (not recommended used,
it causes errors with +camrotate which is permanently attached to it)
button4 - Thumb button on net-browser mice.
button5 - No error, but does not seem to work, either.
button6 - No error, but does not seem to work, either.
button7 - No error, but does not seem to work, either.
button8 - No error, but does not seem to work, either.

Other keys that the names may not be obvious to are:

Capital - Caps Lock
Comma - ,
Equals - =
Esc - Escape / Esc
Home - Home
End - End
Delete - Delete
Mousecord - left and right button combined
Mousewheel - The scroll wheel on the mouse
Pagedown - Page Down
Pageup - Page Up
Insert - Insert
Space - Space bar
Sysrq - Sysrq / PrtScn button
Tab - Tab key

 ~~~ 11 - Bubble Colouring ~~~
This is something that has been asked for quite a bit.  Normally, I just point
the person in question to their options list.  The bubble colour can be
altered from their quite easily, thoughnot in as great of detail.  However,
the sheer volume of requests for this have convinced me to put it in.
Due to the amount of information you need to take full advantage of bubble
colouring, I am giving it its own section.
	Where they work - Bubble colouring commands only work on channels that
create speach bubbles.  That means the standard channels (local, team,
broadcast, ect).
	Where it does not work - Bubble colouring is pointless on global
channels, as these channels do not create bubbles.
 - Basics -
Colour Codes -
The easiest way to use the colour codes is by name.  Red, blue, black, and so
on.  However, if you decide you want more control and detail, you can use
hexcodes.  Because there are 216 hex codes, though, I am not going to list
them all.  I would reccommend visiting a site like:
http://html-color-codes.com/ to find a complete list of codes.
Text Colour -
Border Colour -
Background Colour -
 - Assembling the basics -
Okay, you know the 3 basic commands for changing your chat bubble, now it is
time to put them together.  Using the chat commands listed above, you should
be able to construct any coloured bubble to match with any desired chat
channel.  Remember, the exception is global channels, which do not even
generate bubbles.
The basic bind for the local channel (for example) would go something like this:
/bind enter "local < "
This will generate red font in a black bubble with a white border.  Again, this
will work for any channel by substituting the channel name in place of local.
 - Not so basic -
The upside to doing it this way, more difficult though it may be, is that you
have much more control over what your bubble looks like over all.  You can
alter the bubble size and transparency.
Scale -
The scale command alters the size of your bubble and the text with-in it.  It
scale ranges from 0.00 (non-existant) to 1.50 (150% bigger than standard).  The
default scale is 1.00.  If you go over 1.50 for scale, it is automatically
scaled down to 1.50.
Transparency - Transparency works by adding hexidecimal codes to your
colour codes.  Hexidemimal codes range from 00 to ff.
For those of you not familiar with hexidemcimal codes, 0 means, well... 0.
Nothing.  F equals 15.  You do not need to know anything more indepth than that.
00 is fully transparent, while ff is the default full bubble. And since it is
basically a count to 15, that makes 8 (or 88 for both places) the middle
ground, semi-transparent.
You can do this to all 3 of the bubble colour commands listed above.
 ~~~ 12 - Questions and Answers ~~~

Here, I am going to answer a number of questions regarding binds and macroes
that people seem to ask constantly. If you have a question, please send me a
note.

Question: "How do I set two powers to swap off and on? You know, like switching
	from Hover to Fly with one bind or macro?"

Answer: Actually, this is much easier than some people seem to think. In the
	above sections, I cover how to make a basic macro and bind. I also
	cover how to string powers and emotes. The same concept will work here
	with two powers.

	Why does this work? Because Cryptic designed the system to be anti-bot,
	anti-macro-and-go. You cannot activate more than 1 power at a time,
	with 1 'in the hopper' (primed and ready to go when the first power
	hits). They discovered that people learned how to string powexec_auto
	commands and removed that ability, as well.

	Because of this, if you have 2 powers on a button, only 1 will activate
	when you hit the button. If you hit the button again, the active power
	will turn off and the second power will turn off. The bind would look
	like this:

/bind 4 "powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"

Since the last power listed will activate, pressing 4 will toggle fly. If fly
	is active, pressing 4 will turn off fly and activate hover.

Question: Would you share with me the macro to change your costume with...
	say... whirlwind?

Answer: That is a bit tricky, since the game considers both to be 'events',
	which can only happen 1 at a time. Fortunately, the costume change
	command has a such a short activation time that it can be combined.
	I want to thank Lord Onyx on the Justice server for testing it.
	/macro 	costume "costume_change 1$$powexec_name whirlwind"

	For a bind, simply replace macro with bind and the name with a key.

	A word of caution: you will have to have a bind for each of the
	costume.

Question: You mentioned in one of your posts that you have a single button for
	both talking and powers at the same time, and a way of making the same
	buttons work without talking. How?

Answer: It is not quite as you seem to think. Since I am both a keyboard
	player, and a role-player, the two sometimes interfer with each other.
	Besides, when you are in the middle of a pitched battle, taking time to
	type witty commentary can get you killed.

	To solve this problem, I use the cord keys you will find in chapter 9
	of this guide. To save you the time of looking them up, they are
	lshift and rshift. I generally use lshift, since rshift is out of the
	way for me.

	So, let us assume for a moment you have a Tanker with Unstoppable.
	Using this guide, you tie the toggle for unstoppable to the 7 key
	(/bind 7 "powexec_name unstoppable"). Now, after role-playing a bit
	with your super-group, you want to add a phrase to that. For the sake
	of this example, you want to use the phrase "Nothing stops the Wrecking
	Ball!", but you also want to keep the ability to activate the power
	with-out spamming the message constantly. Here is how it is done:

	/bind lshift+7 "local Nothing stops the Wrecking Ball!$$powexec_name
	unstoppable"

	As a result, you actually have 2 binds tied to basically 1 key:

	bind 7 "powexec_name unstoppable"
	/bind lshift+7 "local Nothing stops the Wrecking Ball!$$powexec_name
	unstoppable"

Question: Is there a limit to how many strings you can place in a macro or
	bind?

Answer: If there is, I have yet to find it. Keep in mind, though, that you can
	only have 1 power activated by a bind or macro, and you can only have
	1 animated emote active at a time. The tendancy is to take the last
	emote or power strung together. And stringing a dozen local commands
	and thought-bubble emotes together will do little more than get you
	labled as a spammer, and consequently /gignored by a lot of people.
	Myself included.

Question: Is there a way to make my Mastermind pets say something while doing
	an action or attack?

Answer: Yes, there is. Above, you will see a section labled "For Pet-based
	characters". These include Controllers and Masterminds. Using the
	petcom command, and the variations listed above, will allow you to
	have your pets shouting while attacking or doing an emote. Please
	keep in mind, though, that having your only form of commanding your
	pets bound/macroed with a command to talk will be very *very* annoying
	to those around you. It can make communication with team mates more
	difficult if you spam the channel with attack commands.

Question: How do I make a bind to speak to a specific global channel?

Answer: I get this request constantly. The information is listed above, but it
	'needs assembly', as it were. So here is an assembled bind:

	/bind f3 "beginchat /send "GFaqs" "

	That is the bind I use on every character for the GameFAQs channel in
	game.

Question: Okay, I know how to send to specific channels now, but how do I get
	that little bubble over my head as I type?

Answer: Just add the afk command at the beginning of the bind:

	/bind f3 "afk Talking on the GFaqs channel$$beginchat /send GFaqs "

Question: Can I bind/macro more than one power to go off one after the other?

Answer: Once upon a time, you could place multiple autofire binds. Cryptic,
	however, decided to pull that ability in Issue 2. Beyond that, there
	has never been any ability to fire off more than 1 ability in a bind
	at a time.

Question: What's a guy gotta do to get his screenshots to show up with the UI
	in it?

Answer: This is a fairly commonly asked question. Though the ansewr is listed
	above, I am going to re-post it here:

	/bind  "screenshotui 1"

	Replace with the key of your choice. The default is PrintScreen,
	and there should be a toggle now in your options to change that to jpg
	with UI, but that is the actual command to do it manually.

Question: How do I get a message to automatically be sent to a channel when I
	activate a power? I want to send a message to the team channel saying
	that I am hitting a specific mob with fire cages.

Answer: /bind  "powexec_name fire cages$$/team I am targeting $target with
	fire cages"

	This can also be used for pets, which is another question I have gotten
	a few times.

	/bind  "e militarysalute$$/team Sir yes Sir"

Question: I want to change my bubble colors. How do I do that?

Answer: I typically suggest that people check the options, go to the right-most
	tab, scroll down, and set it there. It is generally easier.

	However, there are those who want different bubble and text colours for
	different channels. Keep in mind that global channels do not, to the
	best of my knowledge, generate bubbles. That means these are useful
	only for the typical channels (local, team, sg, broadcast, ect).

	/bind [key] "beginchat

	This will give you red text, black background, and blue borders. You
	can change the colours to whatever you want.
