Xatax is a side-scrolling shooter in which the player must defend the remains of the Alliance's guilds against the titular aliens. This is accomplished in a traditional shoot-em-up fashion, fighting waves of alien ships and stationary turrets. The player-controlled ship can become stronger by collecting power capsules dropped by defeated enemies. The game features three different worlds, of which the shareware version only contains the first.

Level passwords let you continue the game from a specific stage without replaying earlier levels. To use a password, navigate to the password entry screen at the title or continue screen, then type the code exactly as shown — including spaces and correct capitalization. The game will load the corresponding level directly.

Level passwords were a common feature in classic games before battery-backed save systems became standard. They gave players a reliable way to preserve progress after powering off the console or PC.
